Things to Do in Fortaleza

Large bronze statue of the indigenous heroine Iracema on the waterfront promenade. Faces the sea and marks the start of the Beira Mar. Popular with local joggers and families.

💡 Visit at sunset for good light and a breeze. The statue's base has info panels about the legend. Avoid the area after dark if alone.

Large weekly market along the seafront. Sells local handicrafts, lacework, wood carvings and small snacks. Not a tourist trap - locals come here too for fresh produce and cheap eats.

💡 Arrive before 09:00 to see stallholders setting up. Try a tapioca crepe from the vendors near the lifeguard tower. Cash only. Barter politely.

Cultural complex with galleries, a theatre, cinema and planetarium. Several exhibition halls and outdoor spaces are free (paid exhibitions vary). Frequent live music and craft markets outside.

💡 The free rooftop terrace cafe has great views over the port. Tuesday is quieter. Check if the planetarium has a free show day.

Small museum dedicated to Ceará's audiovisual culture. Exhibits change regularly and cover film, photography and music. The building itself is a restored 19th-century house.

💡 Check their schedule for free film screenings on Tuesday evenings. Arrive early for the best seats.

Wildlife-rich mangrove park along the Cocó River. Has marked walking trails, a small visitors' centre and wooden bridges over the water. Good for spotting birds and capybaras at dawn.

💡 Go on a weekday morning when it's quiet. Take insect repellent. The free guided trail at 07:00 is worth joining.
