TripSage provides free pre-arrival hotel intelligence to travellers who have already booked. This policy explains how we source, generate, verify and maintain the content on this site — and what we do when we get something wrong.
Our Data Sources
TripSage pulls from multiple authoritative sources depending on the type of data:
- Hotel and POI data: OpenStreetMap (ODbL licence, credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors") — used for hotel coordinates, addresses, star ratings and amenity tags. Free, legal and verifiable.
- Contact information: Each hotel's own official website, verified via direct crawl. Phone numbers and email addresses are sourced from the hotel's own pages, not from aggregators. Where OSM data conflicts with a hotel's own website, the website takes priority.
- Guest ratings and reviews: Google Place Details API — fetched once per hotel on real user visits, then cached indefinitely. We never scrape Google Search or Maps (violates ToS).
- Weather: Open-Meteo (free, no API key) — real-time 14-day forecasts using the WMO weather code standard. Data refreshes daily.
- Local events, restaurants, transport: Generated by Claude (Anthropic's AI), grounded where possible in OSM and Wikipedia data. AI-generated content is clearly used for non-falsifiable text (descriptions, tips, summaries) — not for factual claims like prices, phone numbers or opening hours, which come from primary sources only.
- City and regional context: Wikipedia API — used for historical background and city overviews. Attribution: content reused under CC BY-SA.
Our AI Usage Policy
TripSage uses AI (Claude by Anthropic) to generate content in specific, bounded ways:
- What AI generates: Room intelligence summaries (which rooms are quieter, which views are best), property narrative (history, atmosphere, character), dining and attraction descriptions, budget and money guidance, emergency contact summaries. These are non-falsifiable soft recommendations, not hard facts.
- What AI does NOT generate: Phone numbers, email addresses, prices, ratings, star counts, coordinates, opening hours, or any data point that is verifiable from a primary source. These come from APIs and direct website crawls only.
- Quality gates: AI-generated content is regenerated if it is found to be missing key sections, or if a user reports an error. The regeneration gate checks for structural completeness — not just presence of text.
- Crawlers vs users: For search engine crawlers, AI generation is deferred to background (after the response is sent) so bots receive fast, stable content. Real users see the generation process happen in real time on first visit.
Accuracy Standards
We follow the principle: prefer verified silence over unverified data. If we cannot confirm a hotel's phone number or email from the hotel's own website, we do not display a number — even if an aggregator lists one. Wrong data is worse than no data for travellers who rely on it.
Our coordinate-first deduplication system matches hotels across data sources by GPS coordinates (within 50m = same hotel, within 150m with name similarity >0.5 = same hotel). This prevents duplicate pages where the same property appears under different names across different data sources.
Affiliate Relationships
TripSage earns revenue through travel affiliate links — Discover Cars, GetYourGuide, Trainline, Skyscanner, Wise, World Nomads, OpenTable and Amazon. These are clearly marked in the "Plan the rest of your trip" sidebar on hotel pages.
Affiliate relationships do not influence which hotels appear in our database, their rankings, or the content of their AI briefings. Hotels are included based on OpenStreetMap coverage and are ranked by guest ratings from Google.
Corrections Policy
If you find an error in any TripSage content — a wrong phone number, incorrect opening hours, inaccurate AI summary — please email mailtodaman@gmail.com. We aim to investigate and correct verified errors within 5 working days.
For hotel data corrections: we prioritise primary-source evidence (the hotel's own website, official booking page). Screenshots of the error and the correct information are the most useful form of evidence.
Content Updates
Hotel briefings are generated lazily on first visit and cached indefinitely in our database. They regenerate automatically if key sections are found to be missing (e.g., the facilities dossier is missing money/budget guidance).
Weather data is live and refreshes daily from Open-Meteo. Event data is refreshed periodically by our growth worker. Static content (blog posts, editorial pages) is updated manually by our team.
