Gangaramaya Temple Lake Area

Public pathway around the Beira Lake adjoining the famous temple. See the floating shrine, monitor lizards sunning on banks, and big colony of fruit bats in the trees at dusk.

💡 Go just before sunset. The bats leave the trees around 5.45pm and it's a proper wildlife show, not something most tourists notice.

💡 Donation not required despite what touts near the bridge say. Walk across the concrete ramp, not the wooden one, to avoid slipping if it has rained.

Seema Malaka (Temple on the Lake)

A floating temple platform on Beira Lake designed by Geoffrey Bawa. Peaceful spot with Buddha statues and lotus ponds. No entry fee, but donations welcome.

💡 Best at sunset when the light hits the stupa. Take the shortcut through the Gangaramaya car park to save walking the long way around. Watch for monitor lizards in the water.

Independence Square

Large memorial hall with columns in traditional Sri Lankan style, set in manicured grounds. Walkways, a small fountain, and a jogging track. Popular with locals

💡 The arcade behind the main hall has free exhibits on Sri Lankan history – nobody checks, so just walk in. Evening cricket games on the grass are good to watch.

Getting Around Colombo 03

Coastal Line Train From 10 5 min

Buy a second-class ticket for 20 LKR to avoid crush. Walk five mins from station to hotel; it's a direct, fast hop—but check the timetable as some skip this stop.

Airport Train (Colombo–Katunayake Line) From 100–150 LKR 45 min

Only departs 8 times a day—check timetable online. Good for avoiding traffic, but the station is a 15-min shuttle from the terminal. Have small change.

Airport Express Bus (No. 187) From 150 60 min

Cheapest option but you'll need a tuk-tuk from Fort to Cinnamon Village (around 500 LKR). Get off at Bastian Mawatha stop if you're heading to Kollupitiya instead.

Airport Express Bus (Route 187) to Colombo Fort, then tuk-tuk to Samudra Hotel From 200 LKR 90 min

Get off at York Street bus stop near Colombo Fort. From there, take a tuk-tuk (around 300–400 LKR) directly to Samudra Hotel. Buses have luggage racks but can be crowded during peak hours.

Airport Express Bus (187) From 200–300 LKR 60 min

Cheapest option. Get off at Fort Station, then take a three-wheeler (approx 400 LKR) to Juliana on Galle Road. Avoid peak 7–9am.

Local Bus (Galle Road route) From 20–30 LKR 10 min

Buses are crowded and loud but cheap. Get on at the stop just south of the hotel; ask the conductor for 'Fort' or show your destination. Keep bag in front.
