Things to Do in Chur

💡 Look above ground-floor shop awnings – the best pieces are at first-floor level, and some are hidden in the arcades behind the street.

Regional history museum in a patrician townhouse. Covers Roman Chur, the bishopric, and everyday life through the centuries. Entry is modest (CHF 8) and free on the first Saturday of the month.

💡 Cheat the cost by visiting on a Saturday morning – the free day includes the special exhibition too. The models of medieval Chur are the highlight.

Romanesque and Gothic cathedral from the 13th century, with a striking Carolingian crypt and quiet cloister. Free to enter, with no hard sell for donations.

💡 Sit in the crypt for a minute – the stone absorbs sound completely. It's the oldest part and still has original 9th-century columns.

Wander the narrow medieval lanes of one of Switzerland's oldest continuously inhabited settlements. Look for painted facades, the 15th-century town hall, and the cathedral hidden behind the main square.

💡 Go early morning to see the bakeries deliver fresh bread to hotels – the cobbles are empty and the light hits the Rathaus facade well.

A broad alpine meadow plateau reachable by cable car (paid), but you can walk up the old mule path for free – it's steep but takes about an hour. Big views over the Rhine Valley and into the Alps.
