Things to Do in Birr

A wide, tree-lined pedestrian street with Georgian and Victorian houses, a bandstand, and a fountain. It's the town's main walking route with benches and a weekly farmers' market on Saturdays.

💡 Come for the Saturday market (9am-2pm) for local cheeses and bread. The bandstand sometimes has free folk music in summer.

A modest public park with mature trees, a play area, and a small pond. Good for a quiet sit or a picnic, right off the main street.

💡 The pond has ducks and swans, but don't bring bread—feed them seeds or oats instead.

A 19th-century Gothic revival church with a spire visible from most of town. Inside, look for the memorial plaques and the carved stonework. Usually open during daylight hours.

💡 If the door is locked, check with the parish office next door (number on the noticeboard); they'll often let you in.

Ruins of a 19th-century British Army barracks, mostly shells of buildings and a magazine. Free to walk around, though not signed. Starts just past the Birr Golf Club.

💡 Park near the golf club entrance and follow the path behind the clubhouse. The magazine tunnel is worth a torch if you're curious.

Though the castle is private, the gardens and science centre cost about €8 for adults. The grounds include the Great Telescope, built in the 1840s. It's a short walk from the main square.
