Best Time to Visit Vellore
Vellore is a year-round destination, but weather extremes — searing summers and a short but sharp monsoon — make timing important. The city sits in the rain shadow of the Eastern Ghats, so it's generally drier than coastal Tamil Nadu, but humidity can still be high.
✦ Go from December to February for the best weather, or October to November if you want decent conditions for less money.
✅ Best months
December to February. Days are warm (25-30°C) but not oppressive, nights are cool, and there's very little rain. It's also the main tourist season, but crowds are manageable compared to places like Chennai or Ooty.
🔥 Peak season
December to February. Christmas and New Year bring a spike in domestic tourism, and January sees the Pongal harvest festival. Hotels can be 20-30% more expensive than in shoulder months; book at least three weeks ahead.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
October and November — after the monsoon, temperatures drop and gardens are lush. Hotel rates are 15-20% lower than in peak season, and you'll have Vellore Fort and the Golden Temple far more to yourself.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
May to July. It's hot (35-40°C) and humid, and June/July bring intermittent rain. Some budget hotels offer 30-40% discounts. Trade-off: sightseeing in the middle of the day is draining. Best for early-morning or late-afternoon exploration.
Vellore season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 35-42°C, dry, sunny, with low humidity early on rising to moderate humidity in May
Crowds: medium
Good for those who can handle intense heat; fewer tourists at Fort and temple complexes.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 30-35°C, high humidity, sporadic but heavy downpours from the south-west monsoon
Crowds: low
Budget season. Rain can disrupt outdoor plans, but the landscape is green.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 25-32°C, decreasing rainfall (especially after October), pleasant evenings
Crowds: low to medium
Excellent transitional period. The north-east monsoon gives brief showers in late Sep.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 20-30°C, sunny days, cool nights (15-18°C), negligible rain
Crowds: high
Peak season. Ideal for comfortable sightseeing and attending local festivals.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Pongal (mid-January) — the four-day Tamil harvest festival with kolams, special temple ceremonies, and sugarcane fairs at Vellore Fort. The Golden Temple's weekly abhishekam (every Thursday) is a quieter draw but worth planning around.
🧳 What to pack
Bring a light cotton scarf or shawl — you'll need it to cover shoulders at temples and to mop sweat when the humidity spikes even in 'cool' months.
