Best Time to Visit Ulm
Ulm has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The best weather runs from May to September, but crowds and accommodation prices peak in July and August. Spring and autumn offer a good balance of mild conditions and lower tourist numbers.
✦ Go in late May or early June for the best mix of good weather, fewer tourists and reasonable prices.
✅ Best months
May, June and September: warm enough for riverside walks and sightseeing without the summer crowds. The Danube and Blau valleys are particularly pleasant, and the Ulm Minster is less busy.
🔥 Peak season
July and August: school holidays push up visitor numbers and hotel rates by roughly 30%. The Ulm Zelt cinema festival in July and the summer folk festival (Ulmer Volksfest) in late July/early August are the main draws.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
September and October: hotel prices drop by 15–20% compared to summer, still plenty of sunshine in September, and the streets are quieter. October can be cooler but is still good for walking tours.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December to February: the coldest months, with highs around 2–4°C and frequent fog. Hotel rates are at their lowest, and the city is very quiet except for the Christmas markets in December. Some outdoor attractions close or shorten hours.
Ulm season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 3–15°C, variable. March can be wet and cold; May gets warmer with more sun.
Crowds: low to medium
Good for visiting the Ulm Museum and botanical garden before the crowds arrive. The Danube cycle paths are usable from late April.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 15–25°C (occasional heatwave up to 35°C), long daylight hours.
Crowds: high
Best for outdoor swimming in the Danube, beer gardens, and the full programme at the Ulm Theatre. Book accommodation well ahead for July.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: September 10–20°C, dropping to 2–8°C by November. Often dry and sunny in September.
Crowds: low to medium
Great for hiking in the Swabian Alb foothills and enjoying the grape harvest in nearby wine towns. November is damp and grey.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: -3 to 5°C, occasional snow, frequent fog from the Danube.
Crowds: low (except Christmas markets)
The Christmas market (late Nov–23 Dec) is the main event. Otherwise, a quiet, cheap time to see the Minster and the neighbouring Blautopf spring can be magical if it freezes.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Ulm Christmas Market (28 Nov – 23 Dec): one of southern Germany's largest, with a medieval twist. Ulmer Zelt (July): a three-week cinema and cultural festival in tents on the Danube – popular with locals.
🧳 What to pack
Always pack a rain jacket or umbrella, even in summer – Ulm can get sudden, heavy showers from the Danube valley.
