Best Time to Visit Tochigi
Tochigi has four clear seasons, each pulling a different kind of traveller. Spring brings cherry blossoms and milder weather, while autumn draws crowds for Nikko's foliage. Summer is humid but festival-heavy, and winter is quiet and cold with cheaper accommodation.
✦ Go in May for wisteria and comfortable weather, or in October for autumn leaves and festivals (just book early).
✅ Best months
April and May (cherry blossoms, pleasant temperatures, moderate crowds) and October (autumn colours, lower humidity, manageable visitor numbers).
🔥 Peak season
October is the peak month. Nikko's autumn foliage draws huge domestic and international crowds. Hotel prices in Nikko and Kinugawa double or triple, and buses to the shrines and lakes fill by mid-morning. The Chrysanthemum Festival in Nikkō (Oct–Nov) adds to the crush.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
June and September: mild weather, fewer tourists, and hotel rates 30–40% lower than peak. June has rain risk, but September still offers warm days and low humidity after typhoon season passes.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December to February – coldest months, snow in Nikko, but cheapest accommodation and near-empty shrines. Trade-off: limited daylight (sunset ~4:30pm) and some mountain roads close. Good for those who don't mind cold and want solitude.
Tochigi season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 8–20°C, sunny days, occasional rain; cherry blossoms peak early April
Crowds: medium
Best for cherry blossoms in Tochigi's parks and temples, hiking in Nasu before the summer heat.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 22–30°C, humid with heavy rain in June; July–August is hot and sticky
Crowds: high
Good for festivals: the Utsunomiya Festival (Aug) and the Ashikaga Flower Park illuminations. Expect sweaty temple visits.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 15–25°C in Sep, dropping to 5–15°C in Nov; crisp air, clear skies
Crowds: very high (Oct)
Prime season for Nikko's autumn foliage (Oct–Nov). Book accommodation months ahead. Okunikko's lakes and Kegon Falls are spectacular.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: -2–8°C; snow in Nikko (0–15cm), dry elsewhere
Crowds: low
Quiet temples, cheap rooms, but short days (sunlight ~10am–4pm). Onsen towns like Kinugawa are cosy; Nikko's icy paths can be slippery.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
The Ashikaga Flower Park's wisteria festival (April–May) draws huge crowds for the 160-year-old wisteria tunnels. The Chrysanthemum Festival in Nikkō (October–November) showcases elaborate floral dolls and thousands of mums, timed with peak foliage.
🧳 What to pack
Pack layers even in spring and autumn: Tochigi's temperature can swing 10°C between day and night, especially in the hills around Nikko and Nasu.
