Best Time to Visit Siena
Siena's medieval core is best visited outside the furnace of August, when the Palio crazes the city, and outside the damp chill of December. Spring and autumn deliver the right balance of open blue skies, comfortable walking weather, and a city that still feels like it belongs to Sienese, not just tourists.
✦ Come in late May or early September for the best Siena: bright, warm, and walkable without the crush.
✅ Best months
May and September. May has long daylight, gardens in flower, and manageable crowds. September gives you post-summer temperatures in the low 20s°C, plus the harvest atmosphere in the surrounding Chianti hills.
🔥 Peak season
July and August, especially the week around the Palio (2 July and 16 August). Hotels double their rates, restaurants are packed, and the heat can hit 35°C. The Palio itself is thrilling but the city becomes an obstacle course.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April and October. April still has some rain, but it's quiet and cheaper — good for the Duomo and Torre del Mangia queues. October offers mild days and autumn colours; many hotels drop prices after 15 October.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
January and February. The quietest, cheapest months — you can find rooms under €80. Trade-offs: many small trattorias close for winter holidays, the light fades by 5pm, and the Piazza del Campo can be windswept.
Siena season by season
Spring (Mar–May)

Crowds: low to medium
Best for walking tours and the Palio di Provenzano rehearsal.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 18–35°C, often humid
Crowds: high
Good for early-morning photography; avoid midday. Palio dates dominate calendar.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 10–25°C, crisp air, occasional rain
Crowds: low to medium
Harvest season; ideal for day-tripping into Chianti. Fewer tourists from October.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 0–12°C, overcast, some snow flurries
Crowds: low
Cheapest flights and accommodation. Good for museum visits, but expect closed outdoor cafés.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
The Palio (2 July and 16 August) – a bareback horse race around Piazza del Campo that turns the city into a medieval arena. Less known but equally atmospheric: the Festa della Madonna di Provenzano (17 July), a quieter pre-Palio procession.
🧳 What to pack
Always carry a scarf or light jacket even in summer: the Duomo and Baptistery stay cool, and evening winds off the Val d'Orcia drop temperatures fast.
