Best Time to Visit Shanghai
Shanghai's best window is autumn, when humidity drops and skies clear—a stark contrast to its sweltering summers and grey winters. Spring runs a close second, though increasingly crowded. Winter and summer are trade-offs: cheap but dreary, or warm but suffocating.
✦ Go in late October or November for flawless weather and manageable crowds; spring (March–April) is acceptable if you avoid May.
✅ Best months
October and November. Temperatures hover between 15–25°C, humidity plummets, and the city's notorious smog clears. Hotels remain reasonably priced before peak Chinese holiday surges, and you can actually walk the Bund without drenching your shirt.
🔥 Peak season
September through early October (National Day Golden Week, late September–early October) and May see spikes. Hotel rates climb 30–50%, attractions queue for hours, and domestic travellers flood the city. Spring Festival (January–February) brings another surge, though many venues operate on reduced hours.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
March–April and late November–December. Spring offers mild 12–20°C weather and cherry blossoms at Longhua Temple; rooms cost 15–25% less than summer. Late autumn extends autumn's clear skies with fewer tourists and discounts before Christmas surge.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
January–February (except Lunar New Year fortnight) and July–August. Winter is grey, damp, and chilly (5–10°C); many shops close for Chinese New Year. Summer is brutal—30–35°C with 75–90% humidity, frequent thunderstorms, and mosquitoes. Hotels drop 20–40%, but the experience suffers.
Shanghai season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 12–25°C; occasional rain; humidity rising towards May
Crowds: medium–high
Blooming gardens (Longhua Temple, Yu Garden), but increasingly crowded and hazy by late May
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 28–35°C; 75–90% humidity; frequent storms
Crowds: medium
Cheapest rates and fewer tourists, but oppressively hot and humid; only visit if you tolerate heat
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 15–28°C; low humidity; clear skies
Crowds: high (Sept–early Oct), then low
Ideal conditions; late October–November offers the best window with fewer crowds
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 3–10°C; damp, overcast; occasional light snow
Crowds: low (except Chinese New Year)
Grey and chilly; sights remain accessible, but outdoor exploration is bleak
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Shanghai Fashion Week (April/October) draws industry crowds; China International Import Expo (November, Pudong) fills hotels near the convention district. Time around these if you need industry access; otherwise, plan around their congestion.
🧳 What to pack
Bring layers—Shanghai's humidity and air conditioning create wild indoor–outdoor swings. A lightweight scarf and cardigan are non-negotiable even in summer; in autumn and winter, a proper waterproof jacket shields against moisture and rare drizzle.
