Best Time to Visit Rouen
Rouen has a typical northern French climate: mild but damp, with rain spread fairly evenly across the year. The best time to visit balances decent weather with manageable crowds, which rules out the soggiest winter months and the busiest peak of summer.
✦ Go in June for the best combo of decent weather, fewer tourists, and the chance to catch the Armada if it’s on.
✅ Best months
May, June and September. May and June are often the driest and sunniest, with long daylight hours and the city in full bloom; September is autumn-lite, still warm but much quieter than August.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. Rouen fills with day-trippers from Paris and cruise passengers off Seine riverboats. Hotel rates jump by 30-50% and the city centre, especially around the cathedral and old market square, gets packed. The Fête du Vent (late July) and the free summer music festival (July–August) are the main draws.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
Early July or late September/October. Hotel prices drop 20-30% from peak, weather is still pleasant (18–22°C), and you get the cathedral’s son et lumière shows in summer evenings or the autumn food market (Saint-Romain fair, late October) without the crush.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November to February (except Christmas). The darkest, wettest months, with the cathedral shrouded in low cloud. Hotels are cheapest, often 50% off summer rates, but many smaller restaurants close for winter holidays and the daytime chill (~3-8°C) limits outdoor exploring.
Rouen season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 5–16°C, increasing sunshine but still frequent rain; March can be raw
Crowds: low rising to moderate by May
Good for seeing the cathedral’s Gothic facade in clear light and the Jardin des Plantes in bloom.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 12–24°C, warmest and sunniest, but July/August can be muggy
Crowds: high
Best for evening strolls and the Fête du Vent (kite festival) in late July.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 7–20°C, cooler and cloudier, rain picking up towards November
Crowds: moderate to low after October
The Saint-Romain fair (late Oct) is a big traditional funfair with Norman food stalls.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 2–8°C, grey skies, regular drizzle or light snow; shortest days
Crowds: low
Cheap flights/hotels plus the Christmas market on Place de la Cathédrale (Dec).
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Armada 2025 (June 4–8, every 4–5 years): Rouen’s massive gathering of tall ships on the Seine. Also the Rouen Cathedral light show (July–September, free nightly projection on the facade).
🧳 What to pack
