Best Time to Visit Roma
Rome is a year-round destination, but the weather and crowds shift dramatically. Winters are mild and quiet, summers are hot and packed. Your ideal visit depends on whether you want to sightsee comfortably or find a bargain.
✦ Go in late April or early October for the best balance of weather and manageable crowds.
✅ Best months
April, May, and October. Spring offers long, sunny days with temperatures around 20°C, and the city is in full bloom. October remains warm enough for outdoor dining, with fewer tourists than summer.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. Schools across Europe close, and temperatures hit 30–35°C, making afternoons unpleasant. Hotels charge peak rates, often 50% more than in winter. The major draw is the Ferragosto holiday (15 August), when many Romans leave, but the city still swarms.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
September is the best shoulder month: hotel prices drop 20–30% from August, the heat fades, and queues at the Colosseum and Vatican are shorter. November is also decent for budget travellers, though it can be rainy.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
January (excluding New Year’s week) and February. Hotel rates can be half of summer prices. The trade-offs: shorter daylight, occasional rain, and some outdoor attractions like the Borghese Gardens feel drab.
Roma season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: Mild, 15–25°C, occasional rain showers
Crowds: High in April and May (Easter rush)
Best for walking tours and al fresco lunch
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: Hot, 30–35°C, humid; July and August are intense
Crowds: Very high
Early mornings or evenings are your friend. Book everything in advance.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: Pleasant in Sep/Oct (20–25°C), cooler and rainier in Nov (10–15°C)
Crowds: Moderate to low
Great for museum visits and avoiding queues at major sights.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: Cold, 5–12°C, crisp and mostly dry; occasional frost
Crowds: Low (except Christmas week)
Best for indoor attractions and lower prices. The city has a quieter, more local feel.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Easter week (March or April) brings the Pope’s Mass in St Peter’s Square, plus processions – book hotels six months ahead. Also, the Festa della Repubblica (2 June) features a military parade down the Via dei Fori Imperiali.
🧳 What to pack
Always carry a light scarf or shawl. Many churches (including St Peter’s) require covered shoulders and knees, and the sun is often harsh even in spring.
