Best Time to Visit Qax
Qax sits in northern Azerbaijan, hugging the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. The climate changes sharply with altitude: hot, dry summers in the lowland town and cool, wetter conditions as you climb into the forested mountains. Most visitors come between late spring and early autumn, when the hiking trails are open and the weather is stable.
✦ Go in late May or early September: you get the best weather, working trails, and no crowds.
✅ Best months
May and September. May delivers lush green valleys, wildflowers and comfortable daytime highs around 22°C. September matches that warmth but with clearer skies and the start of the grape harvest in local vineyards.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. Schools are off across the former Soviet Union, and families flood in from Baku and Russia for the mountain air. Hotel prices in central Qax can double. The Qax Summer Festival (late July) adds to the demand.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
June and October. June is warm and dry but before the peak crowds; hotels often offer 15–20% discounts. October sees crisp air and autumn colours, with similar price drops once the summer rush ends.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December to February. Daytime temperatures hover around 3–5°C; snow often blocks high-altitude trails. Most guesthouses close or offer rock-bottom rates (40% off summer prices). You’ll have the town to yourself, but many restaurants and tour operators shut down too.

Qax Summer Festival (late July) – a three-day mix of folk music, food stalls and carpet exhibitions. Also the Qax Grape Harvest (late September) – practical for tasting local wines and seeing traditional pressing in the villages.
🧳 What to pack
Bring a windproof jacket and layers even in summer. The temperature can drop 10°C between the town and the mountain trails, and sudden afternoon thunderstorms are common June–August.
