Best Time to Visit Pompei

Pompei does not change much month to month—the ruins are the ruins—but the experience shifts dramatically with heat, light, and crowds. Summer is punishingly hot and packed; winter is cold but quiet. The best balance of tolerable temperatures and manageable visitor numbers comes in the spring and autumn shoulder seasons.

✦ Go in April or October for the best mix of mild weather and tolerable crowds.

✅ Best months

April and October: daytime highs around 20°C, plentiful sunshine, and crowds that are busy but not crushing. The ruins are open and pleasant to walk, with fewer people than peak summer.

🔥 Peak season

August: hottest month (38°C+), school holidays across Europe, and the most visitors of the year. Hotels in modern Pompei and nearby Sorrento double in price or sell out. The Feast of the Assumption (15 August) adds domestic tourists. Queues at the ticket office hit 90+ minutes by 10am.

💷 Shoulder (best value)

May and September: temperatures warm (25–28°C) but not oppressive. Crowds thin slightly after Easter (May) and before October half-term (September). Hotels typically 20-30% cheaper than July/August. Good light for photos without the midday glare.

🌙 Quietest & cheapest

January: cheapest flights and hotels, minimal queues, 10-12°C. Trade-offs: short daylight (sunset ~4:45pm), some areas of the ruins closed for maintenance, and a cold wind off the bay. Rain is possible but rare.

Pompei season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Weather: 10-22°C, occasional rain showers, flowers in bloom

Crowds: medium (rising in April)

Best for walking the entire site without overheating; good for outdoor lunch breaks.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Weather: 25-38°C, intense sun, very dry

Crowds: high (peak mid-August)

Go at opening (8:30am) or late afternoon. Bring 2 litres of water per person; shade is scarce.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Weather: 15-28°C, cooling in October, light rain in November

Crowds: medium (drops after September)

Still warm enough for T-shirts in September; November can be drizzly but quiet.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Weather: 7-14°C, crisp air, occasional rain

Crowds: low

Good for photography with low sun and long shadows; check closures online before visiting.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around

Settimana dei Beni Culturali (Cultural Heritage Week, third week of May): free entry to the archaeological park for one week. And the Pompeii Ancient Theatre (Teatro Grande) sometimes hosts performances in June/July—check the official site for dates.

🧳 What to pack

Pompei has no shade. In any season, carry a sun hat and a refillable water bottle: the site has free drinking fountains at the Forum and near the Amphitheatre.
