Best Time to Visit Pokhara

Pokhara's climate is broadly subtropical with a clear monsoon divide. October to November offers the sweet spot of clear skies and manageable visitor numbers; March to May brings reliable weather but increasing crowds and heat. June to September is damp and murky—visibility for the Annapurna range collapses.

✦ October or November for views, comfort, and trekking; March–April for fewer crowds and better-value accommodation.

✅ Best months

October and November. Post-monsoon clarity means unobstructed views of the Annapurna massif from lakeside. Temperatures hover 15–25°C. Tourist numbers are substantial but not overwhelming, hotel rates are moderate, and trekking routes are properly dried.

🔥 Peak season

October sees the heaviest footfall—domestic and international visitors converge post-monsoon. Hotel rates spike 20–40% above low-season rates. Dasain (usually September–October, exact dates vary yearly) drives both Hindu pilgrimage traffic and school holidays. November remains busy but slightly cheaper than October.

💷 Shoulder (best value)

March and April. Spring temperatures are warm but not oppressive (18–28°C). Rhododendrons bloom in the hills. Crowds are 30–40% lower than October–November, and hotels offer 15–25% discounts. Visibility is good, though occasional afternoon haze can affect photography.

Pokhara season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Weather: Clear skies, 18–32°C; variable humidity. Late May sees pre-monsoon heat build and occasional dust haze.

Crowds: medium

Rhododendron trekking. Longer daylight hours ideal for lakeside walks and paragliding. Late May gets muggy.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Weather: Warm, 20–28°C, but 75–85% humidity. Heavy monsoon rains (especially July–August). Visibility often <2 km—mountains hidden for weeks.

Crowds: low

Cheapest accommodation (30–50% discounts). Lush green landscapes. Best for budget travellers and indoor museums. Trekking largely pointless. Frequent landslides on mountain routes.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Weather: 15–28°C, low humidity (50–65%). Crystal-clear skies from mid-October onwards. September still damp; October–November pristine.

Crowds: high

Peak trekking season. Annapurna visibility unmatched. September cheaper than October–November. Dasain festival crowds September–early October.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Weather: 10–22°C, dry and clear. Occasional frost at dawn. Early mornings frosty, middays warm. Occasional cloud cover in December.

Crowds: medium

Comfortable for walking and water sports. Thin air; Annapurna visibility excellent. Fewer crowds than autumn. Good value hotels. Some trekkers avoid for cold nights.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around

Dasain (September–October, lunar calendar—exact dates shift yearly) sees temple pilgrimages and temporary influxes; Pokhara hosts celebrations at Barahi Temple on Phewa Lake. Nepali New Year (mid-April) brings a brief domestic surge but is less impactful than Dasain.

🧳 What to pack

Carry a lightweight waterproof layer even in 'dry' months—lake-generated mist can roll in by evening, and afternoon thunderstorms occur during spring.
