Best Time to Visit Mora

Mora, in Costa Rica's Central Valley, has a mild, dry season and a distinctly wet one. The town itself sits at around 1,000 metres, so it's cooler than the coast but warmer than the highlands. Most tourists pass through on their way to Carara National Park or the coast, rather than staying.

✦ Come in December or January for the best weather without the coastal crowds; skip September and October unless you're on a budget or a dedicated birder.

✅ Best months

December and January: the dry season is in full swing, skies are clear, and the town is quiet because most visitors are on the beach. February is also excellent, with the same dry conditions and slightly fewer people.

🔥 Peak season

Peak: late December to early January, plus Semana Santa (Easter week). Hotels in nearby Jacó and on the coast jack up prices 30–50%, but Mora itself stays moderate because it's not a destination. No major events draw crowds here.

💷 Shoulder (best value)

Shoulder: November and March. November is the tail of the rainy season with lighter showers and lower rates. March is still dry but less busy than February. You'll find 10–20% discounts on accommodation.

🌙 Quietest & cheapest

Low: September and October. The heaviest rains hit, roads can be muddy, and some lodges in the hills close. Trade-off: if you don't mind daily downpours, you get the landscape at its greenest and prices at their lowest.

Mora season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Weather: Mar dry, Apr–May transition to rain, highs 26–28°C, lows 17–19°C

Crowds: low

Good for hiking before the rain sets in, but May afternoons can be wet.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Weather: Rainy, especially Jul–Aug; highs 25–27°C, high humidity

Crowds: low

Best time for birding (migrants arrive) and cheap rooms, but expect afternoon storms.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Weather: Heaviest rain Sep–Oct; Nov gives way to dry spells, highs 26–28°C

Crowds: very low

Quietest period. If you're after solitude and don't mind mud, this is it.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Weather: Dry and sunny; highs 27–29°C, lows 16–18°C; nights can be cool

Crowds: medium (Dec–Jan)

Peak season for comfort and outdoor activities; book ahead for holidays.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around

Fiesta de los Diablitos in late December/early January (local Boruca tradition, though held in nearby Boruca village, not central Mora). The Mora agricultural fair (Feria de la Mora) in February showcases local produce.

🧳 What to pack

Bring a light fleece or sweater for evenings, even in dry months – temperatures drop to 16°C after dark.
