Costa Rica
Best Time to Visit Monteverde
Monteverde sits high in Costa Rica's cloud forest, so its weather is less predictable than the coast. Rain falls year-round, but the dry season from December to April offers the clearest trails and best wildlife viewing.
✦ Go in January or February for the best balance of weather and manageable crowds.
✅ Best months
January and February: driest stretch with sunny mornings and lower crowds than December. March and April also reliable, though April can get busier with Easter travellers.
🔥 Peak season
December and January: Christmas and New Year holidays drive big crowds and hotel rates 50–100% above shoulder season. Book three months ahead. Easter week (March/April) also spikes prices.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
May and November: fewer tourists, hotel discounts of 20–40%, and still decent wildlife activity. Expect afternoon showers but morning trails are often clear.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
September and October: wettest months with rain most afternoons and evenings. Trails get slick, some lodges close. Cheapest rates but you'll need good waterproofs.
Monteverde season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 20–25°C, sunny mornings, rain from lunchtime. April and May get heavy showers.
Crowds: medium
Good for birding after dry season; some roads get muddy by May.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 18–22°C, rain most days but often starting late afternoon. Humidity rises.
Crowds: medium-high
July and August bring family holidays; canopy tours run but expect wet boots.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 17–20°C, persistent rain, thick mist. Short bursts of sunshine.
Crowds: low
Cheapest time; many species active in wet conditions, but trails very slippery.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 18–24°C, mostly dry mornings with occasional rain. Cooler nights.
Crowds: high
Best visibility for wildlife and views; book early for holidays.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Feria del Hornazo (February): food festival celebrating local baked goods and crafts. International Jazz Festival (November): three-day event mixing reggae, salsa and blues in the town centre.
🧳 What to pack
Mascot: strong waterproof layer (jacket and trousers) is non-negotiable year-round; even the 'dry season' has regular afternoon rain.
