Best Time to Visit Maros
Maros, just north of Makassar in South Sulawesi, has a tropical monsoon climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The best weather runs from May to October; the rest of the year is hot and very wet.
✦ Go in July or September for the best balance of dry weather and uncrowded sites.
✅ Best months
July, August and September. These are the driest months, with low humidity and clear skies. Crowds are moderate—nothing like Bali—and hotel prices are reasonable.
🔥 Peak season
August. It's the height of the dry season and coincides with the Indonesian school holidays (usually the last two weeks). Hotels in Makassar and Maros fill quickly and prices can double. The Maros Rammang-Rammang Festival sometimes falls in August, drawing day-trippers.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
May, June and October. You get good weather in May and June, before the peak. October still has low rain, but crowds thin out and hotel rates drop by 20-30%.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December to March. The monsoon brings daily downpours, high humidity and flooding in low-lying areas. Many cave sites at Rammang-Rammang are muddy or inaccessible. You'll find very cheap accommodation, but outdoor plans often get cancelled.
Maros season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: Very hot, humid, frequent heavy rain in March–April, easing by May. Temperatures 27–33°C.
Crowds: low
Good for budget travellers who don't mind rain. May is transition month—weather improves.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: Dry, sunny, lower humidity. Temps 24–31°C. Best visibility for karst landscapes.
Crowds: medium
Prime season for cave tours and outdoor treks. Book accommodation ahead in August.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: September still dry; October sees occasional rain; November wetter. Temps 25–32°C.
Crowds: low to medium
September is excellent. October is a good compromise between weather and cost.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: Monsoon: heavy daily rain, high humidity, thunderstorms. Temps 26–33°C.
Crowds: low
Cheapest time, but expect cancelled trips to Bantimurung and Rammang-Rammang. Stick to Makassar city activities.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Maros Rammang-Rammang Festival (usually August): cultural performances, boat races on the river, local food stalls. Also, the Makassar Beach Festival (September) in nearby Makassar includes parades and seafood fairs.
🧳 What to pack
Bring a lightweight, quick-dry rain jacket even in the dry season—tropical showers can appear suddenly, but they pass fast.
