Best Time to Visit Lyon
Lyon has a continental climate with cold winters, hot summers, and reliable sunshine in between. The city is busy with food and cultural events year-round, so the best time depends on whether you want good weather, low prices, or a specific festival.
✦ Go in September for the best balance of sunshine, low hotel rates, and fewer crowds.
✅ Best months
May and September. May has warm days, blossom in the parks, and the Fête des Lumières planning begins. September still feels like summer but with thinner crowds and lower hotel rates than July or August.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. This is school-holiday season across Europe. Hotel prices jump 30–50 per cent. The Fête des Lumières in early December also spikes demand, but that’s a three-day peak rather than a whole month.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April and October. April can be rainy but rooms are 20 per cent cheaper. October is mild, with fewer tourists and the Beaujolais Nouveau buzz. Both avoid the extremes of summer heat and winter chill.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November (before Christmas markets) and January (after New Year). Hotels can be 40 per cent cheaper than in summer. The trade-off is short days, grey skies, and occasional cold snaps. Some smaller museums close for maintenance.
