Ghana
Best Time to Visit Keta
Keta, on Ghana’s south-eastern coast, is hot and humid year-round, but the timing of the two rainy seasons makes a real difference to your visit. The town is quiet outside holidays, so managing rain is key.
✦ Go in November, December or January for the best weather, but avoid the Christmas fortnight if you want lower prices.
✅ Best months
November to February: driest months with lower humidity, cooler Harmattan winds, and emptier beaches. Crowds are thin aside from Christmas–New Year, and hotel rates stay moderate.
🔥 Peak season
December (especially the last two weeks) and early January: Christmas and New Year bring domestic tourists and returning diaspora, pushing hotel prices 30–50% higher. Book months ahead.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
March and April: still dry early on, with some light showers; prices drop by 20–30% after peak season. Good for budget travel before the heavy rains start in May.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
June to August: the main rainy season brings frequent downpours and high humidity. Few tourists, rock-bottom room rates, but many guesthouses close or offer reduced services.
Keta season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 29–33°C, humid. March–April mostly sunny; May sees increasing rain and thunderstorms.
Crowds: low
Good for off-peak beach lounging, but May can be wet.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 27–30°C, very humid with heavy rain, especially June and July. Atlantic swells can make swimming risky.
Crowds: very low
Cheapest time to visit; expect mud, mosquitoes, and closed restaurants.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 28–32°C. September still rainy; October–November drier, with sun and brief showers.
Crowds: low to medium
Lovely for birdwatching at the Ramsar lagoon; improving weather.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 26–31°C, dry with cool Harmattan haze. Low humidity, pleasant evenings.
Crowds: medium (spikes at Christmas)
Best all-round conditions; ideal for exploring forts and the coast.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
The Asafotufiami Festival (though more associated with Ada, 30 km west) sometimes spills into Keta in late July/early August – a colourful warrior celebration. The Keta Lagoon Clean-Up (usually October) involves local eco-activities.
🧳 What to pack
Pack a lightweight rain jacket even in the dry season – unexpected coastal showers can hit, and the Harmattan dust makes sunglasses and a scarf useful.
