Sri Lanka
Best Time to Visit Kandy
Kandy sits in Sri Lanka's hill country, so it's cooler than the coast but gets two monsoon seasons. The city is busy year-round with pilgrims visiting the Temple of the Tooth, but the weather varies a lot between wet and dry spells.
✦ Go in January or February for the best balance of dry weather, clear views, and manageable crowds.
✅ Best months
January to February: dry, clear skies, and comfortable 20–25°C days. April also works well: the Kandy road race and local New Year add energy, though rain starts creeping in.
🔥 Peak season
August: the Esala Perahera festival draws massive crowds, hotels double or triple rates, and the city is packed. Book six months ahead if you must go.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
March and April: still mostly dry, cheaper than peak, and the city is less frantic. Hotel prices drop 20–30% after the Perahera rush.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
October to November: the second monsoon peaks, heavy rain dampers sightseeing. But rooms are cheap, and you'll have the temples nearly to yourself.
Kandy season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 25–30°C, humid with afternoon showers from April
Crowds: medium
Good for the Sinhala & Tamil New Year (mid-April) and Kandy's cultural shows.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 24–28°C, mostly dry but afternoon clouds
Crowds: high
Dominant season is the Esala Perahera in July/August – expect crowds and inflated prices.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 22–27°C, heavy rain especially in October
Crowds: low
Budget choice – very wet, but you can negotiate room rates down significantly.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 20–25°C, dry and sunny
Crowds: medium
Best weather for the Botanical Gardens and Temple of the Tooth; Christmas/New Year spike adds some crowds.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Esala Perahera (July/August): a ten-day Buddhist festival with nightly processions, fire-dancing, and decorated elephants. Book accommodation and train tickets months ahead. Sinhala & Tamil New Year (mid-April): cultural food fairs and family events around the lake.
🧳 What to pack
Bring a light rain jacket or umbrella even in the dry months – sudden hill showers can appear without warning.
