Best Time to Visit Igis
Igis sits in Graubünden’s sunny Rhine valley, a spot with decent weather but real seasonal contrasts. Summers are warm and pleasant, winters cold and quiet, and spring and autumn can be iffy. The key is knowing what you want: summer hiking crowds or winter snow sports.
✦ Go in June or September for the best balance of good weather, open trails, and manageable costs.
✅ Best months
June and September: reliably warm (20–25°C), plenty of sunshine, and trails full of flowers or autumn colours. Crowds are moderate, not overwhelming.
🔥 Peak season
July and August: school holidays bring families, hotel prices jump 30–50% from May rates. The main events are the Churer Fest (mid-August in nearby Chur) and the Engadin Marathon (late summer). Book well ahead.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
May and October: 15–25% cheaper than peak, weather still decent (14–20°C). May has spring blooms; October has golden larch forests and quiet trails.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November and January: coldest, shortest days (sunset by 16:30). November is wet and gloomy; January is deep winter – cheap accommodation if you ski, but many restaurants and hiking paths close. Trade-off: peace and big discounts (up to 40% off summer rates).
Igis season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 3–15°C; March still chilly, May warms to 16°C. Rain likely April/May.
Crowds: low
Good for early hiking if you don’t mind mud; avoid if you need guaranteed sun.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 18–28°C; sunny, occasional thunderstorms.
Crowds: high
Best for hiking, biking, and outdoor festivals. Crowds peak July–August.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 8–20°C; crisp, clear days in Sep/Oct; November turns grey and wet.
Crowds: low to moderate
September is ideal for hiking. November is dead; better for budget-minded travellers who don’t mind rain.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: -5–5°C; snow common Dec–Feb, sunny spells.
Crowds: low to moderate
Cross-country skiing and winter walks. Day-trippers from Chur, but Igis itself is quiet.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Churer Fest (mid-August) in nearby Chur – a big street party with food and music, easily reached by train. Also the Engadin Marathon (late September) – a friendly trail run through the Engadin valley, popular with locals.
🧳 What to pack
A waterproof jacket is non-negotiable all year – rain can arrive without warning, even in summer. Layering always works better than a heavy coat.
