Best Time to Visit Gjirokaster
Gjirokaster has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The city sits at 300m elevation, so temperatures are generally milder than the coast, but rain can be persistent outside summer.
✦ Go in May or September for the best balance of good weather, low crowds, and reasonable prices.
✅ Best months
May and September offer warm, sunny days with temperatures around 25°C, low humidity, and manageable tourist numbers. Hotels are cheaper than in peak season, and you can explore the castle and old town without crowds.
🔥 Peak season
July and August are peak months. Daytime temps often hit 35°C. Hotel prices double from June. The Gjirokaster National Folklore Festival sometimes in August drives big demand, but check dates as it's not annual.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
June and October are ideal budget months. June has long days and low rain (just 30mm) but pre-peak prices. October sees autumn colours and 20°C days, with many hotels offering 30% discounts versus summer.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December to February is quietest and cheapest. Hotels can be 50% off summer rates, but expect 5-10°C days and frequent rain (200mm per month). Some guesthouses close. The cobbled streets are slippery and views often clouded.

Gjirokaster National Folklore Festival (late August/early September, every 5 years; next likely 2029). The city also holds a Local Food Festival in late October.
🧳 What to pack
Bring waterproof footwear for the steep, cobbled streets – they become treacherously slippery in rain, regardless of season.
