Best Time to Visit Gateshead

Gateshead sits on the Tyne opposite Newcastle, sharing its climate but with a quieter pace. The weather is classic north-east English – mild summers, cold wet winters, and a lot of cloud. Your best bet is late spring or early autumn when the light is good, the crowds are thin, and hotel rates stay sensible.

✦ Go in September: the weather holds, the Great North Run is on, and hotel prices are still sane.

✅ Best months

May and September. May has long evenings, running into a decent chance of dry weather, and the city gardens are in bloom. September holds onto summer warmth but loses the school-holiday hordes – and hotel prices drop by about 20-30% compared to August.

🔥 Peak season

July and August. The summer holidays coincide with Newcastle’s big events (the Hoppings funfair, the Mouth of the Tyne Festival). Hotels in Gateshead and Newcastle routinely double their winter rates. Book six months ahead or expect to pay £150+ a night for a basic room.

💷 Shoulder (best value)

late April to early June, and mid-September to late October. Spring and autumn offer discount rates of 15-25% off summer highs. The weather can still be decent (April averages 11°C, October 13°C) and the city is far calmer – ideal for the Angel of the North and the Baltic gallery without jostling.

🌙 Quietest & cheapest

November to February. It’s properly cold (2-7°C daily), dark by 4pm, and rainy. But you’ll see room rates at their cheapest – often £50-70 for a central chain hotel. The Christmas Market in Newcastle (late November–December) livens things up, but January and February are grim.

Gateshead season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Weather: 5-14°C, mixed rain and sunny spells, increasing daylight

Crowds: low to medium

Good for walking the Quayside and gardens. Cheaper than summer.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Weather: 14-21°C, longest days, occasional rain

Crowds: high

Peak tourist season. Booking essential. Outdoor festivals and river events.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Weather: 8-15°C, cooling fast, crisp clear days in September

Crowds: medium to low

Best balance of weather and quiet. Great for gallery visits.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Weather: 1-7°C, frost, rain, short days

Crowds: low

Cheapest rooms but limited outdoor appeal. Christmas lights lift December.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around

The Great North Run (September) – the world’s biggest half-marathon, starting in Newcastle and finishing on the coast. The roads are busy but the atmosphere is electric. Also the Gateshead International Festival of Jazz (usually July) draws top names to the Sage.

🧳 What to pack

A waterproof jacket with a hood is essential any month. Rain falls on one in three days year-round, but wind-chill off the Tyne cuts through a weak coat.
