Best Time to Visit Funchal
Funchal has a mild subtropical microclimate, so it’s rarely too hot or too cold. The main variables are rainfall and crowd levels. Most travellers come for reliable sun, but the sweet spot balances good weather with fewer tourists.

April–June and September–October. These months offer warm, mostly dry days, sea temperatures around 20–22°C, and thinner crowds than July–August. Hotel rates are also noticeably lower than peak summer.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. School holidays and European sun-seekers fill the island. Hotel prices rise 30–50% above shoulder-season levels. The Atlantic Festival (fireworks and classical music on Saturday nights in June–July) and flower festivals drive demand.

May and September. Temps hover 22–26°C, rain is rare, and accommodation can be 20–30% cheaper than in July–August. Still plenty of sunshine, but beaches and levada trails are quieter.

New Year’s Eve fireworks (December 31) – one of the world’s largest, drawing big crowds. Also the Flower Festival (April/May) – parades and street decorations, popular but manageable.
