Best Time to Visit Funchal

Funchal has a mild subtropical microclimate, so it’s rarely too hot or too cold. The main variables are rainfall and crowd levels. Most travellers come for reliable sun, but the sweet spot balances good weather with fewer tourists.

✦ Come in May or September for the best mix of warmth, low crowds, and decent hotel rates.

✅ Best months

April–June and September–October. These months offer warm, mostly dry days, sea temperatures around 20–22°C, and thinner crowds than July–August. Hotel rates are also noticeably lower than peak summer.

🔥 Peak season

July and August. School holidays and European sun-seekers fill the island. Hotel prices rise 30–50% above shoulder-season levels. The Atlantic Festival (fireworks and classical music on Saturday nights in June–July) and flower festivals drive demand.

💷 Shoulder (best value)

May and September. Temps hover 22–26°C, rain is rare, and accommodation can be 20–30% cheaper than in July–August. Still plenty of sunshine, but beaches and levada trails are quieter.

🌙 Quietest & cheapest

November to February (excluding Christmas/New Year). Cooler, wetter: December is the wettest month (around 100mm rainfall). Some mountain hotels close or reduce rates by 40%. Trade-off: fewer daylight hours and chance of cloud cover over the mountains. Good for spa deals and empty restaurants.

Funchal season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Weather: 16–22°C, increasing sunshine, occasional rain in March. Sea temp 17–19°C.

Crowds: low to moderate

Best for levada walks and gardens in bloom. Carnival in February/March is lively but not overwhelming.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Weather: 22–28°C, mostly clear skies, sea 21–23°C.

Crowds: high

Peak season for sunbathing and open-air dining. Book well ahead for hotels and tours.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Weather: 18–25°C in Sep, cooling to 15–20°C by Nov. Increasing rain, especially November.

Crowds: moderate in Sep–Oct, low in Nov

Good for wine harvest visits and quieter hikes. Sea still warm for swimming until mid-October.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Weather: 13–19°C, cloudy with frequent rain. Sea temp 18–19°C.

Crowds: low except Christmas/New Year

Christmas lights are impressive; New Year’s Eve fireworks (a big deal). Spa tourism and low prices outside holiday weeks.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around

New Year’s Eve fireworks (December 31) – one of the world’s largest, drawing big crowds. Also the Flower Festival (April/May) – parades and street decorations, popular but manageable.

🧳 What to pack

It can change from T‑shirt to rain jacket by afternoon. Layering is key: pack a light waterproof even in summer.
