Best Time to Visit Folkestone
Folkestone has a mild maritime climate, so you can visit any month, but the best balance of decent weather and low crowds is late spring or early autumn. Summer brings the most activity but also the biggest hotel bills.
✦ Go in May or September for the best weather without the peak-season crowds and prices.
✅ Best months
May and June – warm but not hot, long daylight, fewer tourists than July–August. September also works well: settled weather, sea still swimmable, prices drop from peak.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. Schools out, the Folkestone Triennial art show (summer of odd years) and the Harbour Arm pop-ups draw big crowds. Hotel rates double from shoulder-season lows.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April and September. April has cool but often clear days and Easter events; September is still mild with reduced rates. Best value for accommodation.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November to February. Cold, wet, windy – many beachfront cafes shut. Hotels cheapest, but the seafront is bleak. The Christmas market in December adds some cheer.
Folkestone season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 7–14°C, mixed sun and showers, occasional chilly wind
Crowds: low to medium
Good for brisk walks, fewer people, daffodils on the Leas.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 15–22°C, mostly dry, can get humid
Crowds: high
Beach weather, open-air dining, the Triennial (odd years). Book ahead.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 8–18°C, cooling down, more rain from October
Crowds: medium to low
September is best; October half-term gets a spike, then quietens.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 2–8°C, grey, rain and wind, occasional frost
Crowds: low
Cheapest time, but many attractions shut. Christmas lights on the Old High Street.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Folkestone Triennial (summer, odd-numbered years) – public art installations across town. Folkestone Air Display (late August) – free air show over the seafront.
🧳 What to pack
Always bring a windproof jacket and a layer, even in summer – the English Channel breeze can drop the perceived temperature by 5–6°C in minutes.
