Best Time to Visit Elm
Elm, in the Canton of Glarus, is a solid year-round destination for hiking and skiing, but the weather shifts hard from season to season. Most visitors come for clear skies and accessible trails, so timing matters more here than in bigger Swiss resorts.
✦ Go in September for the best balance of weather, fewer walkers, and lower prices.
✅ Best months
June and September. June has long daylight, reliable weather, and full lift access for hiking. September brings crisp air, autumn colours, and thin crowds before ski season starts.
🔥 Peak season
August is the busiest month, driven by Swiss summer holidays and family hiking trips. Hotel prices jump 15–20% over July, and the main trails get busy by midday. The Glarner Bergfest (mountain fair) in mid-August draws extra visitors.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
May and October offer good deals: hotels drop 25–30% from summer peaks. May has snow-free trails from mid-month, but some lifts still closed. October has stable weather but shorter days, and most cable cars stop by late October.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November (mid-month to early December) is the quietest. Cable cars are largely closed for maintenance, snow cover is patchy, and rain is common. Accommodation is dirt cheap, but you're mostly stuck with low-altitude walks.

🧳 What to pack
Pack a windproof outer layer and sun protection: Elm sits at 977m, and strong valley winds plus UV from snow or rock can catch you out even in summer.
