Best Time to Visit Douz
Douz, the gateway to the Sahara, has a harsh desert climate with very hot summers and mild winters. The best times to visit are spring and autumn, when daytime temperatures are pleasant for exploring the dunes and markets.
✦ Go in March or October for the best balance of heat, comfort and few other tourists.
✅ Best months
March, April and October. Daytime highs hover around 25–30°C, nights are cool, and there’s little wind or dust. Crowds are moderate – enough to feel lively but not overwhelming.
🔥 Peak season
December and January. The international Douz Festival (late December) draws tourists and locals for camel races, folk music and souk events. Hotel prices can double during the festival. Other winter weeks remain quiet but prices stay elevated.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
November and February. You’ll find discounts up to 30% on accommodation. Weather is still decent (18–22°C), though evenings get chilly. The Sahara is atmospheric with fewer vehicles stirring up dust.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
June to August. Temperatures hit 40°C or more; it’s punishing for trekking. Some hotels drop rates by half. The upside: completely empty dunes and oasis dips if you can take the heat.

🧳 What to pack
Bring a lightweight scarf or shemagh – it’s essential for covering your face and neck during sand-stinging winds, which can occur any season.
