Best Time to Visit Cusco
Cusco sits at 3,400m, so the weather swings between wet and dry rather than hot and cold. The dry winter months (May to September) offer the most reliable conditions for exploring the city and the Sacred Valley, but they also draw the biggest crowds and highest prices.
✦ Go in May or September for the best balance of good weather, fewer crowds, and decent prices.
✅ Best months
May and September are the sweet spot: dry, sunny days with fewer tourists than peak June–August, and hotel rates still reasonable. October can also work, though the chance of rain increases.
🔥 Peak season
June to August are the busiest months, driven by the dry weather, the Inti Raymi festival (late June), and summer holidays in Europe and North America. Hotel prices spike 30-50% above shoulder rates; book months ahead.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April and October are the budget-friendly shoulder months. You'll find decent discounts on accommodation, still mostly dry weather (especially early in each month), and far fewer tourists clogging the ruins and restaurants.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
January and February are the quietest and cheapest. Expect frequent rain, some road closures, and possible trail restrictions (the Inca Trail closes in February for maintenance). Trade-off: you'll have Machu Picchu almost to yourself, but you may need patience with wet weather.
Cusco season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: Cool mornings (5-10°C), mild afternoons (15-20°C), increasing sunshine; March still damp, May reliably dry.
Crowds: Medium; April low, May medium
Good for trekking as trails dry out and wildflowers appear.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: Clear blue skies, cold nights (2-5°C), warm days (19-21°C), almost no rain.
Crowds: High
Peak season; best weather for sightseeing, but crowds at main sites can be oppressive.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: Still dry in September, rain returns gradually; Sep temps similar to summer, Nov gets wetter.
Crowds: September high (post-peak), October medium, November low
Good for photography (golden light in Sep) and lower prices from October.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: Wettest period: frequent afternoon downpours, daytime temps 15-18°C, nights around 5°C.
Crowds: Low
Cheapest time; ideal for budget travellers who don't mind rain and want solitude at ruins.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Inti Raymi (24 June) draws huge crowds for the Inca sun festival re-enactment at Sacsayhuamán. Corpus Christi (movable, usually late May/early June) also fills the city with processions and street celebrations.
🧳 What to pack
Bring a waterproof jacket and a warm mid-layer even in summer. The sun scorches at midday, but temperatures drop fast after 4pm and rain can arrive without warning.
