Best Time to Visit Copacabana
Copacabana sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca at 3,800m, so the weather is cool and dry for much of the year, but the real variable is the rainy season from December to March. Crowds cluster around Peruvian and Bolivian holidays, while the rest of the year offers a more relaxed visit.
✦ Go in April, May or September for the best balance of good weather, thin crowds and fair prices.
✅ Best months
April, May and September – clear skies, mild days, and few tourists. The landscape is green after the rains, lake views are sharp, and accommodation is easy to book at fair prices.
🔥 Peak season
July and August – European summer holidays and the Bolivian winter break fill the town. Hotels charge 30–50% more, and the main square feels crowded. The Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria (early August) brings processions and music.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
September and October – prices drop, the weather stays dry and bright, and you’ll share the basilica and Cerro Calvario with far fewer people. Good deals on lakeside hostels.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
January and February – rainiest months, with grey skies and muddy streets. Fewer places open late, and boat trips to Isla del Sol can be cancelled. Cheap rooms but you’ll need decent rain gear.
Copacabana season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: Cool, 10–18°C. March still has rain, but April and May are mostly dry with strong sun.
Crowds: Low in April/May, moderate in March due to Semana Santa.
Good for hiking the Cerro Calvario and day trips on the lake without the haze.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: Cold nights (near 0°C), crisp afternoons around 15°C. Rare rain, clear skies.
Crowds: High – peak season.
Best window for clear views of the Cordillera Real and reliable lake crossings.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: Temperatures similar to spring, with less wind. October can have occasional showers.
Crowds: Low to moderate.
Excellent for photography and avoiding the peak-season rush; the Inti Raymi festival in late September is a solid draw.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: Rain most afternoons, daytime highs of 15–17°C, nights above 5°C.
Crowds: Low.
The cheapest period but expect wet trails and potential transport delays.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria (early August) – a major religious festival with dances and street parties. Inti Raymi (late September) – an Andean solstice celebration with ceremonies at the ruins on Isla del Sol.
🧳 What to pack
Bring a waterproof jacket even in the dry season – afternoon winds off the lake can bring sudden chilly drizzle that catches you out.
