Best Time to Visit Chennai

Chennai's tropical climate means heat and humidity dominate most of the year, with two monsoon seasons complicating travel plans. The narrow window between December and February offers the only reliably pleasant weather, though it attracts significant tourist traffic. Outside this band, visitors must weigh lower costs against oppressive humidity or heavy rainfall.

✦ Visit November or early December for optimal weather, cultural events, and fewer tourists than peak January; or wait for February if you can tolerate slightly higher humidity for substantially lower prices.

✅ Best months

December to February. Temperatures hover between 24–29°C with lower humidity and minimal rainfall, making sightseeing genuinely comfortable. Hotels remain bookable without extreme markups, and you'll avoid the worst of the monsoons that plague other months.

🔥 Peak season

December–January. This coincides with winter in the Northern Hemisphere and post-Christmas holidays, driving international and domestic tourism. Hotel rates spike 30–50% above low season; major sites like Kapaleeshwarar Temple and Marina Beach become crowded. Flights and accommodation require advance booking.

💷 Shoulder (best value)

October–November and February–March. Post-monsoon freshness in October–November with clearer skies, manageable 28–32°C heat, and discounts of 20–30% on mid-range hotels. February remains warm (26–30°C) but crowds thin significantly after mid-month as winter visitors depart.

🌙 Quietest & cheapest

May–September. Temperatures exceed 35°C with crushing humidity (80%+), and the Southwest (June–August) and Northeast (October–November) monsoons bring heavy rain and occasional flooding. Hotels offer 40–50% discounts, but expect disrupted sightseeing, limited outdoor activity, and sweltering conditions. Travel here only if budget is paramount or you're visiting air-conditioned museums and indoor cultural venues.

Chennai season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Weather: 26–37°C, humidity 70–80%, dry but increasingly oppressive by May

Crowds: medium

Tail end of the cool season; March remains pleasant, but April–May are among the year's hottest months. Useful for budget travellers willing to stay indoors during peak heat.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Weather: 28–35°C, humidity 80%+, Southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and occasional flooding

Crowds: low

Cheapest period but the least pleasant. Rain can disrupt transport and outdoor activities; however, lush landscapes and virtually tourist-free sites appeal to hardy travellers.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Weather: 27–33°C, humidity 75–85%, Northeast monsoon brings rain September–October, clearing by November

Crowds: low to medium

September–October wet and humid; November is excellent with post-monsoon freshness, clear skies, and moderate crowds. Best value outside peak season.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Weather: 24–29°C, humidity 65–75%, mostly dry and sunny

Crowds: high

Peak season. Ideal weather but crowded and expensive. December and January particularly busy; February offers slight relief with comparable comfort.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around

Margazhi Mahotsavam (December–January): a month-long classical arts festival centred on Kapaleeshwarar Temple with bharatanatyam dance, Carnatic music, and temple rituals attracting enthusiasts worldwide. Pongal (mid-January): harvest festival with temple celebrations, kolam (rice-flour) art, and cultural events across the city.

🧳 What to pack

Lightweight, breathable cotton clothing is essential year-round; pack a compact umbrella or rain jacket even in 'dry' months (monsoons can arrive suddenly). Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are non-negotiable for the brutal midday sun. For the monsoon months (Jun–Oct), waterproof bag for electronics is practical, not optional.
