Best Time to Visit Chartres
Chartres is a year-round destination, but your experience changes a lot with the season. The cathedral draws crowds, but outside of summer and festival weeks, the city is quiet enough to wander without jostling.
✦ Go in June for the best weather, the light show, and before the July crowds hit.
✅ Best months
May, June and September. Mild weather, long daylight, and manageable visitor numbers. The cathedral's stained glass is best seen in summer sunlight, but these months offer a good balance of comfort and calm.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. School holidays fill the town with families and tour groups. Hotel prices can double. The Chartres en lumières light show (nightly in summer) is the main draw, running from April to October but busiest in these months.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April and October. Good weather for walking, noticeably fewer tourists. Hotel rates drop 20–30% versus summer. Still worth checking the cathedral's opening hours; some attractions shorten hours in October.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November to February (except Christmas market week). Cold, grey, and often wet. The cathedral stays open, but many smaller museums close. Hotel prices can drop 40–50% off peak. The trade-off is quiet streets and near-empty interiors for seeing the glass.
Chartres season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 5–17°C, variable rain
Crowds: medium
Good for the cathedral's west façade in morning light; the Jardins de l'Evêché start blooming in May.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 14–26°C, warm and often sunny
Crowds: high
Prime time for the Chartres en lumières light show; book accommodation months ahead.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 6–20°C, cooling fast in November
Crowds: low to medium
September still warm, October quieter, November chilly. Harvest season in surrounding Beauce region.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 0–8°C, grey, frequent drizzle
Crowds: low
Avoid for most; only recommended for photographers wanting empty cathedral interior or for the Christmas market in December.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Chartres en lumières (mid-April to mid-October): nightly projection mapping on the cathedral and 20 other sites. Fête de la Cathédrale (late June): free organ concerts and medieval-themed events around the cathedral.
🧳 What to pack
Bring a rain jacket even in summer; Chartres sits on the plain and gets sudden showers any month.
