Best Time to Visit Chania
Chania, on Crete's northwest coast, has a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The best time to visit balances good weather with manageable tourist numbers, avoiding the July–August peak.

May and June, then September. May has long days, wildflowers, and warm seas before the summer crowds. June is reliably hot but not sweltering, and the harbour restaurants are busy but not frantic. September gives you sea temperatures at their warmest, fewer families, and lower room rates than August.
🔥 Peak season
July and August. Hotels in the Old Town and along the coast charge 50–80% above shoulder-season rates. The crowds come for guaranteed sun, beach parties, and festivals; the Venetian harbour and Elafonisi beach get packed.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
Late April–early May and October. In April you get cheaper rooms and quieter streets, though some tavernas and boat trips only open from May. October still delivers 25°C afternoons and discounts of 30–40% on summer rates. Sea swimming is possible until mid-October.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November through February. Hotels drop to £40–60 a night in the Old Town. Many restaurants and attractions close or run reduced hours. Rain falls roughly every other day, and the Akrotiri wind can be sharp. You get the city to yourself, but it’s a wet, grey, sleeping Chania.

Cheapest flights and rooms, but many tavernas on the harbour shut till March. Good for museum visits and local life.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Chania Rock Festival in July brings three nights of Greek and international bands to the old Venetian walls. The August Nautical Week includes sailing races, seafood feasts, and concerts along the harbour.

Bring a light windbreaker or fleece even in summer – the meltemi wind can gust strongly along the coast, especially in August afternoons.
