Best Time to Visit Cape Town
Cape Town's Mediterranean climate means pleasant weather year-round, but December to February brings peak summer crowds and prices, whilst June to August offers mild winters with far fewer tourists. The sweet spot falls between March and May, when summer heat breaks and winter hasn't yet arrived.

March to May (autumn). Temperatures hover between 20–25°C, rainfall is minimal, and tourist numbers drop sharply after the December-February surge. Hotel rates fall 20–30% below peak, and Table Mountain visibility is excellent.
🔥 Peak season
December to February. Summer holidays drive international and local tourism; accommodation prices spike 40–60%, restaurants book out weeks ahead, and beaches become crowded. The V&A Waterfront and popular hiking trails reach capacity mid-January.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
September to November (spring) offers warming temperatures (16–22°C), moderate crowds, and rates 15–25% below peak. September brings wildflower blooms and returning migrant birds. May to June transitions to winter with cooler but still-pleasant conditions (14–20°C) and further price drops.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
June to August (winter). Temperatures dip to 12–18°C and rainfall increases, especially July. Hotels offer discounts of 30–50%, and attractions are uncrowded. Trade-off: Table Mountain frequently disappears into cloud, some coastal days are too rough for boats, and a few restaurants close briefly.

Sweet spot. Excellent visibility, manageable temperatures, and fewer crowds. Best month for Table Mountain summit hikes.
Winter (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 12–18°C, frequent rain and cloud. Wind common, especially July. Occasional clear, crisp days.
Crowds: low
Cheapest period. Table Mountain often cloud-capped; hiking conditions variable. Good for museums, markets, and indoor activities. Kelp gulls and seabirds active.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Hermanus Whale Festival (late September to early October) draws 30,000+ visitors for land-based Southern Right Whale sightings and events; book early. Cape Town International Jazz Festival (late March/early April) fills venues and accommodation; autumn advantage with excellent weather.
🧳 What to pack
Always bring a windproof outer layer, even in summer. Cape Town's southeasterly wind ('Cape Doctor') is relentless year-round and temperature drops sharply once the sun sets or cloud rolls in from the Atlantic.
