Costa Rica
Best Time to Visit Caño Negro
Caño Negro is a floodplain wetland in northern Costa Rica, best visited when water levels either concentrate wildlife or drop to allow walking safaris. The dry season from December to April is reliably good for spotting birds and mammals; the rainy months (May–November) test your patience with mud and mosquitoes but offer solitude.
✦ Visit in January or February for the best balance of dry trails, visible wildlife, and manageable visitor numbers.
✅ Best months
January and February: water is receding, wildlife is concentrated around remaining pools, and trails are dry enough for easy walking. Crowds are moderate and skies are clear.
🔥 Peak season
Mid-December through February. Christmas and New Year bring a surge of international tourists; hotels often quote 30–50% above shoulder rates. The main draw is Guarco indígena celebrations in late January, but most visitors come for dry-weather wildlife viewing.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
March and November. March sees stable weather without the Christmas premium; November is wet but drying, so you get low-season prices plus a chance to see migratory birds arriving.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
September and October. These are the wettest months, with daily downpours and swollen rivers making boat tours unreliable. Fewer visitors mean quiet lodges, but you’ll trade comfort for peace.
