Best Time to Visit Cannes

Cannes can be a dream or a nightmare depending on when you go. The Mediterranean climate means hot, crowded summers and mild winters, but the city's pulse is dictated by the film festival and a few other major events. Pick your months carefully or you'll either fight for a hotel room or find the place half asleep.

✦ Go in September for the best balance of warm weather, open venues, and sane prices.

✅ Best months

May and September. In May, the festival brings electric energy (book far ahead), and the weather is warm but not scorching. September offers settled heat, thinner crowds, and still-open beach clubs, with hotel prices a fraction of July-August.

🔥 Peak season

July and August. School holidays pack the Riviera full; Cannes is mobbed. Hotel prices double or triple. The heat can be stifling, and the Croisette is a sluggish crawl of traffic and tourists. Avoid unless you love shoulder-to-shoulder sunbathing.

💷 Shoulder (best value)

April, May (non-festival days), and September-October. April still has some rain but fewer people and better rates. September-October deliver warm sea, quieter beaches, and hotels at 60-70% of peak prices.

🌙 Quietest & cheapest

November to March (excluding Christmas/New Year). Many restaurants and hotels close; the weather is cool (10-15°C) and can be rainy. You'll find cheap flights and rooms, but the town feels subdued. Good for walks and cheap rates, not for a beach holiday.

Cannes season by season

Spring (Mar–May)

Weather: Mild, 12-20°C; some rain in March, sunnier by May. Sea still cool.

Crowds: Low to medium

Good for sightseeing without heat. The film festival (May) spikes prices and crowds for two weeks.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Weather: Hot, 25-30°C, often humid; sea warm (22-25°C).

Crowds: High

Beach weather but packed. June is slightly less intense; August is madness.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Weather: Warm September (20-25°C), cooling to 10-15°C by November; more rain.

Crowds: Medium to low

September is golden—still warm, fewer people. October is quiet; November is very low season.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Weather: Cool, 5-15°C; grey days and occasional rain.

Crowds: Low

Cheapest time. Christmas markets add brief bustle. Many restaurants shut; it's for bargain hunters, not sun seekers.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around

Cannes Film Festival (mid-to-late May) — the big draw; prices skyrocket but the glitz is unmatched for film fans. Also the Cannes Lions advertising festival (June) draws a different professional crowd.

🧳 What to pack

Pack a proper light jacket or cardigan even in summer. Evenings on the Croisette can get chilly from the sea breeze, and air conditioning indoors is often fierce.
