Best Time to Visit Beijing
Beijing's climate swings dramatically across the year, from freezing, dry winters to hot, humid summers. Autumn and spring offer the sweet spot: mild temperatures, crisp air, and manageable crowds. Visit outside these windows and you'll contend with either pollution spikes, oppressive heat, or bitter cold.
✦ Go in September or mid-April to early May for the best confluence of weather, visibility, and manageable tourism.
✅ Best months
September to October and April to May. Temperatures hover between 15–25°C, humidity is low, and the famous smog is typically at its weakest. Crowds are moderate—noticeable but not overwhelming—making it possible to see the Great Wall and Forbidden City without crushing queues.
🔥 Peak season
October (National Day Golden Week, 1–7 October) and May. Domestic and international visitors flood the city; hotel rates spike 40–60% above baseline; tourist sites reach capacity by 9 a.m. The Forbidden City and Badaling section of the Great Wall become congested. Book accommodation months ahead.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
Late April and early June, plus September before October National Day. Hotels offer 20–30% discounts compared to peak; weather remains pleasant (though early June creeps toward humidity). Crowds thin noticeably after schools reopen in September.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December to February and July to August. Winter brings sub-zero temperatures, occasional heavy snow, and the year's worst air pollution (heating season compounds smog); many outdoor attractions feel bleak. Summer offers clear skies but oppressive heat (30–35°C) and humidity make sightseeing exhausting. Hotels are cheapest, but the trade-off is real.
Beijing season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 3–20°C; clear, crisp. March still cool; late May approaches warmth and humidity.
Crowds: Medium to high
Peony and cherry blossoms peak in April–May at temples and parks. Ideal for walking the Great Wall and exploring hutongs.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 22–35°C; humid, occasional thunderstorms. Air quality mixed.
Crowds: Medium
School holidays drive some domestic tourism mid-July to mid-August. Summer Palace and outdoor venues popular. Afternoon heat limits comfort.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 10–25°C; dry, crystal-clear visibility. Ginkgo trees turn gold in October–November.
Crowds: Medium to high (October peak)
Best air quality of the year. Perfect hiking and sightseeing. October National Day Week is congested; September and November are gentler.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: -8 to 5°C; dry but bitter cold, occasional snow. Heavy pollution mid-December to mid-February.
Crowds: Low
Cheapest hotels and emptiest sites, but smog obscures views and outdoor time is punishing. Avoid unless cold-hardy or seeking solitude.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
China National Day (1–7 October): massive celebrations, fireworks, parades, and peak tourism. Beijing Chrysanthemum Exhibition (typically September–October, various parks): ornamental displays worth timing a trip for if you value horticultural events.
🧳 What to pack
Layer aggressively. Autumn and spring see 15°C swings between midday sun and evening chill; a lightweight jacket is essential even in mild months. Winter requires insulated coats and thermals; summer needs sunscreen and a light scarf (many restaurants and museums crank air conditioning).
