Eritrea
Best Time to Visit Barentu
Barentu sits in the hot, semi-arid lowlands of western Eritrea. The climate is governed by a long dry season and a short, erratic rainy spell. Most visitors come between October and March, when temperatures are bearable and roads are passable.
✦ Go between October and December for the best balance of bearable heat, local colour, and open roads.
✅ Best months
October to December. Days are warm (28–34°C) but not scorching, nights cool down pleasantly. This is also the main harvest period, so local markets are lively.
🔥 Peak season
December and January. Cooler weather draws more travellers and family visits. Hotel prices can jump 20–30% and advance booking is wise. No major festivals, but holiday travel from the diaspora spikes demand.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
February and March. Still dry and warm, but fewer visitors. Hotels often negotiate rates. Dusty conditions, but good for budget travel.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
May to August. Hottest months (daytime 38–45°C) with occasional heavy downpours in July–August. Flooding can disrupt road travel. Hotels are cheapest but many facilities close or run reduced hours.

🧳 What to pack
Bring a sturdy wide-brimmed hat and a reusable cloth face covering – Barentu gets serious dust haze from the Gash River basin from February to May.
