Best Time to Visit Arba Minch
Arba Minch sees a monsoon split: a long dry season from November to March, then heavy rains from April to October. Roads to Nechisar National Park and the Rift Valley lakes can become impassable during the wet months.
✦ Visit between December and February for the best all-round experience; budget travellers should aim for November or March.
✅ Best months
December to February offer the sunniest, driest conditions with daytime highs around 28C. These months also avoid the worst of the dust and haze that can obscure lake and mountain views toward the end of the dry season.
🔥 Peak season
January is the busiest month, partly because of the Ethiopian Christmas celebrations (Genna) on 7 January and stable weather. Hotels in Arba Minch often double their rates from December through mid-February, and advance booking is essential.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
March and November are excellent budget choices. November catches the tail of the dry season with fewer tourists and discounts up to 30% on accommodation; March sees the first brief rains and still manageable conditions before the main wet season.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
June–August is the quietest and cheapest period, with lodge rates often halved. The heavy rains make trails in Nechisar slippery and the Crocodile Market viewing point frequently inaccessible. Expect regular afternoon downpours and limited wildlife sightings as animals spread out.

🧳 What to pack
Always carry a rain jacket or umbrella from March to October, even on supposedly dry days—sudden afternoon thunderstorms are common and can last several hours.
