Best Time to Visit Anzio
Anzio, a coastal town 60km south of Rome, has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, crowded summers. Its main draw is the beaches and WWII history, so timing matters more than for a city break.
✦ Go in late May or early September for the best balance of heat, crowds, and value.
✅ Best months
May and September: temperatures in the low 20s°C, sea swims are possible, and day-trippers from Rome are fewer than in July or August.
🔥 Peak season
July and August: temperatures hit 30°C+, hotel rates double, beaches are packed with Romans, and the Ferragosto holiday (15 August) peaks the chaos in town.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April and October: rooms are 30-40% cheaper, weather is still pleasant (15-20°C), and you’ll have beaches largely to yourself – sea may be too cool for swimming in October.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December to February: cheapest hotels, but many beachside bars and restaurants close; weather averages 8-13°C with rain; main appeal is war cemeteries and quiet walks, no beach life.
Anzio season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: 10-22°C, sunny but occasional rain in March
Crowds: low
Good for sightseeing and the Anzio War Cemetery; sea still cold.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: 20-32°C, mostly dry
Crowds: high
Peak beach season; book accommodation months ahead. Lively but sweaty.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: 13-25°C, some rain from October
Crowds: medium in Sep, low in Nov
September is a continuation of summer warmth without the crush.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: 6-13°C, frequent rain and wind
Crowds: very low
Off-season tranquillity; museum visits and coastal walks require layers.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
Sagra del Carciofo (Artichoke Festival) in late April celebrates local produce with food stalls and cooking demos. The Battle of Anzio commemorations on 22 January draw history buffs to the beachheads and cemeteries.
🧳 What to pack
Even in midsummer, bring a windproof jacket – afternoon breezes off the Tyrrhenian can be surprisingly cool after a hot day.
