Peru
Best Time to Visit Anta
Anta sits in Peru's Sacred Valley at 3,400 metres, so it's cool and dry for much of the year with sharp diurnal temperature swings. The best time to visit depends on whether you want clear skies for hiking or lower prices and fewer tourists.
✦ Go in May or September for the best balance of reliable weather, moderate crowds and reasonable prices.
✅ Best months
May and September: these months have the driest weather and near-perfect daytime temperatures (18–22°C), with fewer visitors than the peak June–August window. You also catch the tail-end of the dry season's best visibility.
🔥 Peak season
June–August: this is the high season for Cusco-area travel, so hotel prices in Anta can jump 30–50% above shoulder rates. The clear skies are excellent, but archaeological sites get crowded and advance booking is essential.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April and October: rooms are 20–30% cheaper than peak months, the weather remains mostly dry (though October sees more afternoon showers), and crowds thin out noticeably.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
December–February: the rainiest months, with frequent afternoon downpours and muddy trails. Prices drop significantly (up to 40% off high season), but many operators run reduced schedules and cloud cover can block views.
Anta season by season
Spring (Mar–May)
Weather: Cool mornings (5–10°C) rising to 18–22°C by afternoon. Rain diminishes steadily through May.
Crowds: Low–medium
Good for cheap last‑minute trips and fresh green landscapes before the peak influx.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Weather: Clear skies almost daily; daytime highs 19–23°C, nights can drop to 2–5°C.
Crowds: High
Peak trekking season – book Inca Trail permits and hotels months ahead.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Weather: September stays dry, then October–November see increasing afternoon showers.
Crowds: Low–medium
Great for photography in September; November offers low prices if you can handle some rain.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Weather: Frequent rain, especially January (wettest month). Days reach 16–20°C but it feels colder with cloud cover.
Crowds: Low
Cheapest time, but expect limited visibility and possible trail closures.
🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
The Señor de Qoyllur Rit'i pilgrimage (late May/early June) draws thousands of colourfully dressed dancers to the nearby Sinakara Valley – a unique cultural event. Inti Raymi (June 24) in Sacsayhuamán, about an hour away, is the Inca sun festival and a major regional draw.
🧳 What to pack
Pack a warm jacket and hat for every trip – even in the dry season, temperatures drop below 5°C after sunset. A waterproof shell is essential from October to April.
