Best Time to Visit Amsterdam
Amsterdam's appeal shifts dramatically across the year: spring and autumn offer the best balance of mild weather and manageable crowds, whilst summer brings peak tourism and higher prices, and winter delivers solitude but grey skies and cold rain. The city is genuinely worth visiting year-round, but timing matters significantly for your experience.
✦ Visit April–May or September–October for the optimal mix of weather, affordability, and navigable crowds; avoid July–August unless museums and canals at capacity appeal to you.
✅ Best months
April–May and September–October. Spring offers 13–17°C temperatures, blooming tulips (especially early April), and moderate crowds before summer peaks. Autumn delivers similar mild conditions (14–19°C), golden light ideal for photography, and a notable dip in tourist numbers after August.
🔥 Peak season
July–August. School holidays across Europe drive daily visitor numbers above 2 million; hotel rates often rise 40–60% above shoulder months; museum queues exceed 2 hours; canal boat tours sell out; and the Anne Frank House regularly hits capacity by mid-morning. The city feels genuinely congested.
💷 Shoulder (best value)
April–May and September–October command prices 20–30% below peak whilst retaining pleasant weather (15–19°C). Late October and early November are particularly underrated—autumn foliage lines the canals, many festivals run, yet accommodation and restaurant tables are readily available.
🌙 Quietest & cheapest
November–February. Rooms drop to 30–50% below summer rates; restaurants and museums are pleasantly quiet; but expect grey, drizzly conditions (2–7°C), shorter daylight (around 8 hours in December), and occasional icy streets. Late December–early January sees a brief uptick due to New Year tourism.

🎭 Events worth timing a trip around
King's Day (27 April): the entire city becomes a street party with orange-clad crowds, live music, and canal-side festivities—hotels book months ahead. Amsterdam Dance Event (mid-October): electronic music festival drawing 350,000+ visitors; accommodation fills fast but post-summer prices remain reasonable.
🧳 What to pack
Waterproof jacket and sturdy cycling trousers are non-negotiable year-round—the city's wind, rain, and bike-riding culture mean you'll encounter wet conditions regardless of season. In winter, add layers and waterproof shoes; in summer, light rain gear replaces heavy coats.
