Things to Do in Beni Saf

Central monument to the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962). Three stylised stone palm leaves with eternal flame. Simple plaza with benches and a line of flagpoles. Occasional local ceremonies keep it well maintained.

💡 Come in the morning when the primary school classes come to lay flowers — it adds context. The adjacent bakery (Boulangerie la Plage) sells excellent mhadjeb for 50 DZD.

Main public beach with dark sand and calm waters. Sheltered by cliffs, good for swimming. Basic wooden shelters line the back of the sand. No loungers or umbrellas for rent.

💡 Arrive before 9am to claim a spot near the rocks at the east end — the shade lasts longest there. The café at the west ramp does cheap mint tea and grilled sardines (150 DZD).

Clifftop walking path along the coast east of town. Grey limestone cliffs, scrubby garrigue, sheer drops to turquoise coves below. Follow the unmarked track from the end of the corniche road for about 1 km. Small sandy coves accessible from the path.

💡 Wear sturdy shoes — the path crumbles near the edges. The third cove, signposted only by a rusted iron ladder, has the clearest water and fewest visitors. No shade after 11am; go early or late.

Ruined 19th-century Spanish fortification on a hilltop overlooking the port. Low walls with cannon mounts remain. Short climb from the end of Avenue de l'Indépendance. Panoramic views across the bay to Sidi Safi and the new port.

💡 Take water and wear shoes with grip — the path has loose stones near the summit. Best light is at sunset, but bring a torch for the descent. No signage; locals call it El Kalaâ.

Active lighthouse at the western end of the sea wall. White tower, red lantern room. Walk along the jetty for front-row views of fishing boats returning in late afternoon. The keeper sometimes lets visitors up for 100-200 DZD.

💡 The best photos are from the rocks at the base of the lighthouse, not from the road. No café nearby — carry a bottle. Go on a Friday when the fishing fleet is at harbour all day.
