Things to Do in Balıkesir

Small museum in the city centre covering local history from ancient times through the Ottoman era and Turkish War of Independence. Includes ethnographic displays and archaeological finds.

A 15th-century Ottoman mosque with a striking single dome and a small covered bazaar attached. The courtyard is peaceful, and the stonework is worth a look.

💡 Non-Muslims can enter outside prayer times. The bazaar has decent lokum (Turkish delight) shops. Go quietly out of respect.

A well-kept central park with wide paths, benches under plane trees, and a small pond with ducks. Popular with locals for evening strolls or sitting with tea from the kiosk.

💡 The park has free public Wi-Fi. Best at sunset when families come out. Kiosk tea is around 5 TL.

A protected wetland on Lake Manyas, home to hundreds of bird species including pelicans and herons. Walk the wooden boardwalks through reeds and watch from observation towers.

💡 Go early morning or late afternoon for the best bird activity. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Ruined Byzantine-era fortress on a low hill north of the centre. Not much remains except stone walls and ramparts, but the view over Balıkesir and the surrounding plain is expansive.

💡 Wear sturdy shoes – the path is uneven and overgrown in places. Best at golden hour for photos. No facilities so take water.
