Deeper Into Baghdad

Al-Shaheed Monument

A striking turquoise dome split in two, built to honour Iraqis killed in the Iran-Iraq war. You can walk around the base and see the flame inside the dome. The park grounds are open to all.

💡 Go late afternoon. The light through the turquoise tiles is best then, and the park is quieter after 4pm.

Baghdad National Museum

Houses Mesopotamian artefacts, including Assyrian reliefs and Sumerian pieces. The entry fee is very low (around 2,000 IQD, about $1.30).

Al-Zawraa Park

Baghdad's main public park with large green lawns, a small lake, and a zoo. Entry is cheap (1,000 IQD, about $0.65). The zoo is separate but also low cost.

Baghdad International Airport Taxi From 15,000 IQD 35 min

Agree on 15,000-20,000 IQD before you get in. The official airport taxi stand is safer than touts outside arrivals.

Airport Express Bus From 3,000 IQD 50 min

The bus is packed and has no AC. Sit near the driver window if you have bags. It drops you at Al-Andalus, not right at the hostel.

Local Minibus (Kia) From 500 IQD 30 min
