Things to Do in Bacoli

A massive Roman cistern carved into tuff rock, once supplying the nearby fleet with fresh water. It’s an atmospheric underground space with vaulted ceilings and 48 pillars.

💡 Bring a torch – the lighting is minimal. You can book a free guided tour at the tourist office in Bacoli centre, but walk-ins are usually fine outside peak season.

Roman thermal baths with well-preserved mosaics, domed chambers, and terraced ruins overlooking the sea. A main ticket costs €8, but you can stand at the fence near the entrance and see the upper layers for free.

💡 Buy a combined ticket with Castello di Baia for €12 and save. Go early (before 10:00) to avoid heat and crowds.

The town’s old quarter, a tangle of narrow streets, small squares, and fishing cottages. You’ll see dried anchovies hanging outside bakeries and old women hanging laundry from wrought-iron balconies. Perfect for a wander with no ticket needed.

💡 Stop at Forno Ciro on Via Cumana for the softest taralli – about €1 each, and they’re still warm from the oven. Don’t miss the tiny church of San Sossio, often open in the morning.

A 16th-century Aragonese castle offering sweeping views of the Gulf of Pozzuoli. The small museum inside covers local archaeology and volcanic history. Entry is €5 for adults, free on the first Sunday of the month.

💡 Head to the rooftop terrace at sunset – you get a clear view of Ischia and Procida. Skip the cafe inside; it’s overpriced.

A volcanic lake sitting in the crater of an extinct volcano, with a walking path around its edge. It’s calm, quiet, and used by locals for fishing and paddleboarding. No charge to access.
