Things to Do in Ambalangoda

Bustling local market with stalls selling fresh fish, vegetables, spices and cheap street food. Best for a glimpse of daily life.

💡 Try a kottu roti from the food stall nearest the bus stop – costs about 200 LKR and is cooked fresh in front of you.

Old temple with a large seated Buddha statue, colourful murals and a small dagoba. Peaceful courtyard with a view over paddy fields.

💡 Offer a small donation (100 LKR) to the monk for incense and a blessing. Wear long trousers or a sarong.

Less-visited temple with a modern dhamma hall and an old bo tree surrounded by stone pillars. Very quiet in the afternoon.

💡 Walk around the back to see the small meditation cave used by monks. no entry fee but leave a small donation if you take photos.

Long, quiet stretch of grey sand with gentle waves, used mostly by local fishermen. Cleaner than more touristy beaches further south.

💡 Walk south from the main road for 200 metres to find a calm spot away from the fishing boats. No shade, so take a hat.

Small museum run by the Ariyapala family, displaying traditional Sri Lankan masks used in devil dances and rituals. Entrance fee is about 500 LKR (roughly £1.50).
