Things to Do in Aligarh

The largest public park in Aligarh, with open grass, walking paths, a children's play area, and a small artificial lake. Popular for evening strolls and impromptu cricket games.

🕐 5am-9pm daily (free entry until 7pm; small fee after for maintenance events).

💡 Come around 5pm when the heat drops and locals gather. The north corner has a line of food stalls—try the aloo tikki (10 rupees) or fresh sugarcane juice (15 rupees).

Museum dedicated to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh Movement, housed within the Aligarh Muslim University campus. Displays manuscripts, photographs, and personal items of the reformer.

🕐 10am-5pm, closed Sundays and public holidays.

💡 It's very small—30 minutes is plenty. Combine it with a walk around the AMU campus, which is leafy and free. Ask the guard to unlock the upstairs room with the original 1875 school artefacts.

An ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Jamuna, located on a small hill overlooking the city. The site is a quiet spot with a few shrines and a large banyan tree.

💡 The temple has no fixed hours—just go when it's open (usually dawn to dusk). Take the steps up from the main road; at the top, there's a chai stall with excellent ginger tea for 5 rupees.

A 16th-century fort built by the Mughals, later used by the British. You can walk the outer grounds and see the ramparts and gates for free; small fee for the interior museum.

🕐 Open 24 hours for exterior; interior museum 9am-5pm daily, closed Mondays.

💡 Go early morning (before 8am) to avoid crowds and catch locals exercising on the grounds. The view from the eastern wall over the town is best at sunrise.

A cluster of 25 small Shiva temples built in the 19th century, set around a central pond. The architecture is simple but atmospheric, with faded frescoes and carvings.

🕐 Usually 6am-12pm and 4pm-8pm; variable, best to visit during morning aarti around 7am.

💡 Most temples are locked except during festivals (especially Mahashivratri). The caretaker lives in the first temple—knock politely and he'll open a couple for you. Bring offerings (milk or flowers) if you want a blessing.
