Deeper Into Agri
A 35-metre-wide impact crater formed by a meteorite in 1892. The site is a fenced depression with an information board and dirt track access.
🕐 24/7, but best in daylight
💡 Combine with a visit to the nearby village of Uzunyazı. The crater is on private farmland, so ask permission at the first house you see.
Ancient salt-mining tunnels carved into a hillside. The air inside is said to help respiratory conditions; locals come for therapeutic stays.
🕐 08:00-18:00 (visitor centre manned; tunnels accessible anytime)
💡 Drive via Tuzluca town and follow signs to 'Tuz Mağarası'. Bring a torch and warm clothes – it’s cool inside even in summer.
Final Favourites & Departure
An 18th-century Ottoman palace complex with ornate stonework, courtyards, and views over the plain. Entry costs 30 Turkish Lira (about £1).
💡 Go early morning before 9am to avoid crowds and catch the low light on the palace facade. The nearby car park is free.
Getting Around Agri
This bus only runs when flights land – check your flight arrival time. From the otogar, you'll need a second bus (hourly, 40 TL) to Doğubayazıt, then a 10-min walk uphill to the hotel.
Do not pay more than 50 TL for this short trip – drivers often overcharge tourists. Walk 200 metres east to the main road and flag a passing dolmuş instead for 10 TL.
Minibuses are cramped but reliable – sit on the left side for views of Mount Ararat. Ask the driver to drop you at 'Grand Aga' junction, it saves the 2 km walk uphill from the main otogar.
Fix the price before you get in: most drivers quote 700 TL but will haggle to 600 if you insist. Cash only, no meter.
