Weekend in Aalborg

Small city museum in a 14th-century merchant's house. Covers Aalborg's medieval trade, Viking history, and daily life through sparse but well-chosen artefacts.

Tip: The museum is free but donation box at the door is appreciated. Allow 45 minutes; it's modest but rewarding. Combine with a walk through nearby streets.

Remains of a 13th-century Franciscan monastery now part of a hospital complex. Look for the arched cloisters and old stone walls preserved in the courtyard. Quiet and atmospheric.

Tip: Enter through the main hospital building on Boulevarden, then walk through to the rear courtyard. Best visited on a weekday when it's quiet. Free and no crowds.

Central park with large lawns, a duck pond, and mature trees. Open green space ideal for a picnic or a rest between sights. No fancy landscaping, just calm and functional.

Tip: Go early morning to see locals and dog walkers. The park connects to the Aalborg Congress Centre and there's a pleasant walking path along the stream.

Converted power station turned into a cultural centre with cafes, a library, and exhibition spaces. The industrial architecture alone is worth a look: exposed brick, steel beams, and huge windows.

Tip: The ground-floor library has free internet and a quiet reading area. Check the noticeboard for free events: jazz concerts, art openings, or film screenings often cost nothing.

Architecture centre on the harbourfront, designed by Jørn Utzon of Sydney Opera House fame. The building itself is the main draw; exhibits rotate and cover modern design.

Tip: You don't need a ticket to explore the free outdoor areas: the roof terrace and waterfront sculpture park are open all the time, with good harbour views.
